Navy Bomber Jacket with Pearl Pin Brooches

The navy half of the pair: the same Barbara Alvisi bomber, the same cluster of five gold pearl-drop safety pins at the chest, but on deep ink-navy with a gold-tone zip instead of silver. The warmer metal against the dark cloth makes it the dressier of the two colours.

Fabric & feel

75% polyester, 19% viscose, 6% elastane, made in Italy — matte, suiting-weight, with a soft fall and a little give. All the trims are self-fabric rather than knit rib: a stand collar, and cuffs and hem gathered onto elastic so the sleeves balloon slightly and then close neatly at the wrist. Two flap patch pockets at the hip. The upper back is shirred into a yoke, which is what keeps the volume from reading shapeless from behind. More on the cloth in the Italian fabric guide.

Fit & sizing

Relaxed and slightly long in the body — cut with tall women in mind, per the supplier. Low-hip length, roomy across the shoulder, full through the sleeve. M and L. How to wear it

Navy against indigo is the shot for a reason — tonal, no contrast to manage. It also does what black cannot: it warms up next to camel, cream and tan. Wear it over a white shirt with wide-leg trousers for daytime, or over a slip dress with heels once the sun goes down. Care

Dry clean only. Take the pins off before cleaning and lay them flat for storage. A broad hanger keeps the gathered shoulders from collapsing. Steam only — pressing kills the yoke shirring, and on navy a hot iron will leave a shine.
